Week 4 EOC: Discussion Questions

Currently, how many divisions do Dolce and Gabbana have in their company? Has it grown since this chapter was written? If so, how?
The company has Dolce and Gabbana, D&G, and D&G Junior but I think they may be discontinuing D&G for a while and focus on the more higher end of Dolce & Gabbana Products.

Do you think Dolce and Gabbana cater to the fashionistas that the rest of the design world has rejected? Why do you think they have dressed women like Isabella Rossellini, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Brooke Shields?
Because they had bodies and curves that actual women have. They use that as a marketing technique to prove that they care about every type of women, and that everybody and every women should feel beautiful.

Do you think these women are risqué? Why or Why not?
Yes of course, they are working with D&G and they are known are risque, but it wouldn't be a bad image upon the women.

Do you think gay and lesbian consumers purchase different fashion brands than heterosexuals? Do you think it was smart for Dolce and Gabbana to target this market? Why or why not?
As a gay consumer I actually purchase things that are really close to what heterosexuals. Although people perceive the gay community to wear exposing clothing or outrageous fashion but I think it's the other way around. I think heterosexuals wear the more revealing clothing and fashion and thats something to consider thinking about, when you're going out next time.

Week 3 EOC: Discussion Questions

Is Ralph Lauren a designer? Why or why not?
he may be a designer, but he isn't at the same time. He may came up with the creation process, and the design strategy but he doesn't have the skill to come up with fashion designs for everyday wear.
Where did Ralph Lauren work prior to working for himself? Why do you think this experience was beneficial to his career?

Currently, how many divisions does Ralph Lauren operate under his name? Can you identify the target market of each division? Are they homogenous or diverse?

What is your favorite division of Ralph Lauren? How does that emulate your personal lifestyle?
The Purple Label. It doesn't really emulate my personal lifestyle, but it does give me a perspective of others lifestyles.

How has Ralph Lauren built on his original brand to create an empire and an almost unparalleled career in fashion? Can you think of someone else who compares to him?
1.) Tommy Hilfiger
2.) Guess Jeans by Georges Marciano
3.) Calvin Klein
4.) Burberry's
5.) Gucci
6.) Emporio Armani

Week 3 BOC: Beech Nut

The company was founded in 1891, to the town of Mohawk Valley.. Along with his friend John Zieley and their brothers founded The Imperial Packing Co. with the production of Beech-Nut ham. The product was founded on the smoked hams of their father, a farmer. The company's principal products were ham and bacon for the first years they started. David and John Zieley sold their shares.
The company was incorporated as the Beech-Nuttagum Packing Company in 1899. In 1900, the company's sales were pretty good. Makers of Beech-nut patented the first vacuum jar with a design that included a Gasket and top that could remain intact so that it was spill proof.
During the first 25 years or so of the 20th century, the company expanded its product line into a multitude of products.

Week 2 EOC: Discussion

1. How was fashion advertising changed since the mid 20th century? What are some of the differences between ads that appeared before the 1950s and those from the 50’s 60’s and today?

Advertisements before the 1950’s were a little bit more conservative, and more in your face about things than the usual advertisements. Then there are ads that suggest a lot of controversy that was ok in the 1950’s. There are also ads that express more product placement with just a model in the picture representing the consumer itself.

2. What are some of the theories related to fashion branding? What do they say about fashion branding as means of communicating with consumers? How do the contemporary ideas of Hamilton, Debord, Agins, Gobe, and McCracken relate to those of Bauridrillard?

3. What types of meaning does grant McCracken associate with fashion products? Examine its ads today and those from past campaigns. What are the differences? did this fashion company follow its target market clients as they aged? Back up your research with clear examples.

Week 1 EOC: Discussion Questions

1. What is fashion branding? How does branding establish a products identity?
Fashion branding is a way to establish a company. The way it looks, feels, how people perceive the brand. It also creates a different experience and feeling because fashion branding is different from any type of branding. Fashion branding can also represent the image of a service that the brand is giving. An example of fashion branding is Christian Louboutin, he is famous for his red soles and that is how he brands his name. Because he has the red sole within the shoe it stands apart from any shoe brand on the market because it targets a specific type of consumer that recognizes the brand.

2. How are companies able to sell like T-shirts, jeans, and sunglasses at high prices? Can you give an example of another item sold in the luxury market that might not have been traditionally perceived as a luxury good?
Companies that are able to sell expensive T-shirts, Jeans, and sunglasses were already established through branding themselves in an excellent way. If you gave any luxury goods establishment socks they would be able to sell those socks in a heartbeat, because of how they carry the brand. It also depends where they get the fabric from as well.

3. Race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation play a part in purchasing decisions.Identify three consumer groups that are different from you. In your opinion, do they differ from each other with regard to fashions and the types of brands they purchase? Why or why not?
Three groups different from me would be African-Americans, Females, and Mormons. They all dress a different way from how I dress. Either way everyone purchases something different that represents my style. Females tend to over spend, African-Americans tend to go on the inexpensive side of fashion, and Mormons tend to overspend on more conservative clothing. As for me I tend to find things inexpensive and expensive to create a different style. Overall everyone's purchasing ideas are different so we can't expect the same thing.

Week 2 BOC: My Voice

As a Fashion Marketer and merchandiser, I plan to show a different perspective of fashion by applying all that I learn into what I will do. The retail industry is not about what you have or what you can afford it’s about how you apply yourself and what you know to the company so that you can improve the company you own. When I was little I could always see what creative thing I can come up with next, but now I have lost all my inspiration for what I was doing and who I was. Trying to find my talent and passion was really hard when you don’t know what to do with what you know already. Later I learned from a wise person that being in fashion doesn’t mean that you could always get to become the designer. There’s more to it than being just the Designer. You also have to know the business side of fashion. Being in the industry is hard work but being in the business is harder, it’s where you put your, blood, sweat, hard work and perseverance that will get you going. I decided that I am the creator of the fashion and business industry; and being the creator is like the designer, now I have the power to change advertisements and marketing strategies, and fashion forward looks each season.

Week 1 BOC: Slip! Slap! Slop!

Slip! Slap! Slop! Is a brand that really carry’s out their product as well as care for the consumer themselves (Literally). When we were little tykes we always found some sort of rhyme to help ourselves remember that we have to eat our vegetables, clean our room, or do the laundry. When Slip Slap Slop came along it was almost the only thing that people couldn’t go without. Because of the catchy phrase kids and adults alike were able to remember to put on their sunscreen before heading out in the hot sun. This was especially famous in the summer when kids would come home with sunburns and red skin. Slip Slap Slop actually teaches you to become wary of them sun. An example is Slip meaning slipping on your clothes, Slap to put some sunglasses or a hat on, and slap to cover the remaining parts of your body with the sunscreen to protect yourselves from the harmful rays of the sun. There are also theories saying that the sunscreen is actually bad for you says Improve Health,

“The Sun, we were told (just like so many other natural things)  is bad for you; so you need to “slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat”.

“The sunscreen part firstly has been called into serious question. Do you know that if you use a sunscreen you are more than 80% more likely to develop a melanoma than someone who doesn’t.”

“Melanomas are the most lethal form of skin cancer. Melanomas  have been increasing in incidence continuously since 1983 across all age groups in spite of everyone slipping, slopping, and slapping”

What Improve Health is trying to say is if you don’t get exposure to the sun, you may experience a lethal form of skin cancer, which is really bad. Overall this cause quite a controversy which is really whether to use the sunscreen or not.
